NEW IN THE SCENE.........
World Cupping Treatment
So if you're are anything like everyone else in the world, you'll probably going to be watching the World Cup, or at least some of it. And though watching a game such as Algeria vs. Slovenia from home(on CCTV5) may be compelling enough, there are certain games that just need to be watched with friends, fellow fans, and foes whilst drinking copious amounts of beer, and as my case will be tomorrow night(June 12) constantly heckling every Englishman in sight. As we're sure every bar with a TV from here to Fuling will be showing the matches, we've chosen to highlight a few places where we wouldn't mind watching Wayne Rooney break a leg or Christiano Ronaldo become paralyzed.
The Long Bar at the Hilton will be showing every match of the tournament, including a "Kick-off" party tonight, and will be having a special menu throughout the tournament featuring 2 for 48rmb Carlsberg drafts, meat pies, and sausages(weltmeistershaft anyone?).
The Harp Irish Pub in Hong Ya Dong will also be showing all of the action and is teaming up with the American Chamber of Commerce on Saturday the 12th for a party to celebrate the United States second defeat of England in their last two encounters(I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...)
One of our favorite places to grab a drink in general, CiCi Park will be showing the matches and though I'm not aware of any specials, their 12 rmb black beer s one of the best drink deals in town.
The outside bar or "beer Garden in Jeifangbei will most likely be showing matches, though they have disapointed in the past.
And lastly, the new Ma Dai Bar(麻袋酒吧), in Shapingba(重庆 沙坪坝区 欣阳广场沙坪坝派出所后面麻袋酒吧 ) will offer up the action, and also feature some of the cheapest drinks and one of the most relaxed atmospheres around.
Reptile & Retard: a few words with a cold-blooded crusader...
Back in May Danish Techno-soul duo rocked not only Chongqing, but a handful of cities throughout China. Prior to their show at Nuts club we asked them a few questions via email, and as life on the road was a bit hectic at the time they were unable to answer my questions. They've since returned to Denmark and the "soul" half of the duo Retard, took the time to respond to our questionable questions(and we've finaly taken the time to publish them)...[

Wanzhou scene?...
Nestled into the mountains a little way north up the Yangtse sits Wanzhou; Chongqing’s second city. Seeing as Chongqing itself only has a handful of decent bars, I had no expectations and was surprised: Wanzhou has a lot to offer. The city itself is how I imagine Chongqing before 1997, a lot smaller and less built up – it’s buildings and mountain/river location are similar – however the lesser degree of pollution means the mountains are actually visible most days. Nevertheless the drone of development resounds across the city...

Chongqing 15 vs. Chengdu 15

T. Barnez on the move
As mentioned here before, The Chongqing Conquerors Rugby team took on Chengdu at the weekend, and in their best showing yet drew with the Black and Whites 15 all. Local Frenchman and photographer
Denis Lejeune was there to capture some incredible photos of the game which you can view
here.
and the fries to match...
Tracking down hamburgers in Chongqing has been a passion of ours since here at cqscene for a long time. Times have not changed. I admit I've been a little slow on this one however, first hearing about the Beer Garden Bar and Grill, in Jeifengbei's Deyi Shijie bar area. In my defense however, we were still in a time of gray skies, and that unpleasant cold humidity that plagues the city. Needless to say, the weather then, was not the weather it is now, and last Friday, in the early evening nothing sounded better than sitting outside with a burger and a beer.
The beer, your standard "outside bar" Carlesburg draught, was made better solely for it being a cold beer on a warm day. The burger my friends, was one worth returning for. And though the food at hand gets its name from Germany, its no secret that America is where she was born and bred, and it was of no surprise to see the man behind the grill, to be from one of the 50 states. Cooked to perfection, the burger can be enhanced with a variety of items such as white chedar cheese, grilled mushrooms, and bacon to name a few, along with "gramma's secret sauce" the Beer Garden and Grill's burger rivals any to be tasted on either side of the two rivers. Being a passionate consumer of mustard after some good time spent in Germany, my experience was slightly soured by the lack of god's condiment, but head Chef Mike Shane was quick to assure me that they would be having it soon, as chili dogs are destined for the menu in the near future.
You, You, You!
About a year or so ago I read
this article, about a little known culinary treasure, that lay within our grasp. Shan Cha You(Mountain Tea oil), or Camellia oil, made from pressed tea seeds, and apparently has some fatty acids and antioxidants that are good for you. After doing some searching when I first heard about the oil, it wasn't until recently that I found it at one of those Yong Hui supermarkets that have been popping up all over town. The
City Weekend article I linked to and
wikipedia can do it more justice than I'm willing to give time, but I do cook with it and must say, prefer it other cooking oils, with the exception of olive, but at a fraction of the price you can't go wrong.
A look at Chongqing indie fashion label Niba...
Niba is a collaboration between Huang Ruojia (黄若珈, aka: Heng’er) and Yu Jiamiao (虞佳苗, aka: Miao), frontwoman of
The Deep Green Sea. When we asked Heng’er what inspired her designs she simply replied, “I don’t like shopping.”
